Using the Echo Dot Kids Edition in Canada

Amazon offers quite a few Echo devices including the Echo Dot Kids Edition, which is not just great for kids but has plenty to offer for parents too.

Setup

Getting started with the Echo Dot Kids Edition is fairly easy, just plug in it and follow the steps in the Alexa app on your phone. The Echo Dot Kids Edition comes in a kid-friendly case (either in blue, green or red).

You’ll also need to change your Amazon Kindle store account from Canada to the US. This won’t affect buying products on Amazon.ca but it will allow you to use Amazon FreeTime Unlimited which the device comes with a 1-year subscription for.

During the setup process for the Echo Dot Kids Edition, you’ll be asked to create a profile for your children, so they can access their favourite Alexa skills, Audible books and kid-friendly playlist.

Step-by-step instructions for how to set up your Echo Dot Kids Edition for use in Canada can be found here.

Using the Echo Dot Kids Edition

The main selling point of the Echo Dot Kids Edition is the FreeTime Unlimited subscription, which gives your kids access to lots of fun and education content from ad-free radio stations and playlists and Audible audiobooks (more than 300 to choose from) to skills and games from Disney, Nickelodeon and more.

For parents, they’ll be able to keep an eye on your kid’s usage of their Echo Dot using the Amazon Parent Dashboard that lets parents set daily time limits, review activity or even pause Alexa.

Parents can also use the Echo Dot Kids Edition as an intercom to call their kids for dinner or tell them it’s time for bed.

The Echo Dot Kids Edition also comes with voice shopping turned off by default as well as 3.5mm audio out and Bluetooth built-in.

Alexa, what can you do?

Since the Echo Dot Kids Edition comes with Alexa, you and your kids can ask her questions like “what’s the weather?” or “How far is the moon?.” Just be sure to set your location and temperature setting to Celsius in the Alexa app.

The Echo Dot Kids Edition can also allow you to control your smart home devices such as Philips Hue, Wemo, ecobee and even stream video feeds from Ring, Arlo, Wyze Cam and Nest right to the device screen.
